October 17, 2014 (St. Ignatius of Antioch)

St. Ignatius of Antioch was an early church bishop and martyr. He wrote letters on his way to Rome to give his life for the faith. In the Liturgy of the Hours we read excerpts from them. He kept saying that he didn’t want anyone to interfere with his impending death by trying to come to his defense.

Sometimes, in today’s world, many people can’t understand his attitude toward his death for the faith. What are you willing to die for? What are you willing to sacrifice for? The word “sacrifice” seems to have gone out of our language. Who wants to sacrifice?
