November 2, 2014 (All Souls)

The gift of eternal life, like every good gift, has to be freely appropriated by human beings. Unconditionally given by God, this gift of eternal life is nevertheless conditioned upon the believer’s acceptance. How do we show this acceptance? (As Jesus said by loving Him and following His commandments.) We have to live out our faith. As Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does My Father’s will.'” Today, we celebrate all the faithful who now live in eternity, and we pray that one day the words of Jesus in today’s gospel will become a reality: “[that we] may have eternal life, and [be raised] on the last day.” May these words be accomplished for all wo have died, and, one day, for each of us.
