When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, the Temple in Jerusalem was still standing. In calling the community in Corinth the Temple of God, Paul was, in effect, declaring that the divine presence resided in them. The Spirit of God was no longer to be associated with just a building, however sacred. It now dwells in the believing, praying, and worshiping community. Just as the building is sacred because of the people who fill it and what they do there are sacred, so are we created to be sacred: holy temples of the Spirit of God. As St. Paul; reminded his community in Corinth, and us today, we are each being formed into a dwelling place for God on earth.
