December 22, 2014 (1 Sam 1:24-28)

The First Reading and Responsorial Psalm all deal with the story of Hannah and Samuel. Hannah had been barren and prayed to God to have a son and promised that if God granted her request, she would give him back to God. Today’s reading is the story of her bringing the young Samuel to the shrine and the priest Eli. Eli would train him and he would be the last Judge of Israel and lead the country into the monarchial period with Saul as king. The Responsorial Psalm is “Hannah’s Song” which is the basis for Mary’s Magnificat (the gospel).

Hannah’s story reminds us that all we have comes from God. She returned her son, God’s gift, back to be of service to God. Everything we have is really God’s, gifts from God. So, why not share God’s bounty with others!

“O King of all the nations, the only joy of every human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You fashioned from the dust.”
