“What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?” One of the recurring themes of Mark’s Gospel is the true identity of Jesus of Nazareth and how difficult it is to discern His real identity. Throughout the gospel, the demons (spirits) seem to know who He is but everybody else seems to misunderstand. It is only on the cross that the centurion says without hesitation that “Truly, this was the Son of God.”
In today’s gospel, Jesus drives out a demon, an unclean spirit. It was believed that you could disarm the power of a spirit, or anyone else, by speaking or writing their name. So, the demon calls Jesus “the Holy one of God.” By doing so, he hopes to disarm Jesus, but Jesus drives out the unclean spirit any way showing His superiority.
We all have demons to face. Do we call upon Jesus to help us drive the demons out or do we try to go it alone?
