Feb. 10, 2015 (Gen 1:20-2:4a)

“God created man in His image…male and female He created them.”

Man (Adam) in Hebrew is related to the word for earth (Adama). Man came from the dust and will return to the dust (we’ll hear that as ashes are put on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday). We don’t know what a camel or other animals were made from (Genesis doesn’t tell us). But, Genesis tells us what man was made from. Man is connected to the earth. In Latin, the word for human is connected to the word for earth (humus), as well.

God made man, the human being, to be connected to the earth (humble has the same root) but also to rise above. The human being is meant to be the height of all creation. Why? Because we are made in the image and likeness of God. Do we recognize the image of God in ourselves? How about in others? Thus, all humans need to be treated with a special dignity. Yes, even the fellow down the street that we don’t much like!
