Good choices for Lenten practices are those that really change us, and not just during Lent. In other words, simply “giving up” something and forgetting about the practice when Lent is over isn’t really going to help us do what the Gospel is asking of us. Oh, we can fast or give up something for Lent, even participate in “Lenten devotions” like the Stations of the Cross and still remain basically unchanged in our attitudes, values, priorities and basic way of living. This is not keeping Lent. To do real penance means to do something that transforms us, changes our minds, changes our hearts.
