In today’s Gospel, Jesus takes familiar laws from the Torah and gives them new meaning. Jesus tells us that not just the letter but the spirit of the law is important. For example, “Thou shall not kill,” and makes us realize that things like anger, which can lead to violence, need to be addressed as well. You can’t say that you love God and yet kill one of His creatures. You can’t say that you love God yet hate your neighbor. For wisdom and compassion in our relationships with one another, we pray.
