3rd Sunday of Lent (“First Scrutiny”)

Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well that He can give “living water.” She misunderstands and thinks that he means physical water. Jesus means spiritual water that He is the only one that can quench our spiritual thirst, our thirst for God. All of us have a “God hole” in us that only God can fill. The tragedy is that many try to fill it with something other than God, e.g. material things, drugs, booze, sex, etc. When we do this it is like trying to quench our physical thirst by drinking salt water; the more we drink, the thirstier we get.

We must remember that it is Jesus, and only Jesus, who can quench our spiritual thirst; can fill the void in us; can quite the restlessness that we all have.
