Eastertide is but one part of the larger Paschal Season that finds its heart in the Triduum and its preparation in Lent. Easter is a time to delight in the fruits of Lent and the Triduum: our reconciliation, our ransom, and our redemption. The meaning of this great festival of Easter cannot be understood or explained in one day only. If it takes three days to commemorate the Pasch (Triduum) and 40 (actually 44)days to get ready for it (Lent), is it any wonder that it takes 50 days (Easter season) to celebrate? The Word of God that we hear during these 50 days serves to explain the mysteries that we celebrate at the Easter Vigil. By making the Word we hear our own, we discover how Easter Mysteries, the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist make a difference in our lives. Easter doesn’t just celebrate what happened to Jesus but what happens to us. And we celebrate this wonderful happening for 50 days.
