St. Athanasius is one of the most important early Church fathers. He was the champion at the Council of Nicea fighting the heresy of Arianism that denied that Jesus was truly God. The true nature of Jesus is crucial to our understanding of Christianity. The heresy would persist for some after Athanasius. We see a version of it in the Da Vinici Code and other attempts to portray Jesus as a man of Wisdom but not the Second person of the Blessed Trinity.
