Four little verses in the gospel for this Trinity Sunday. But, they are packed with significance. Jesus gives His disciples (and us) the Great Commission to evangelize and baptize in the name of the Trinity. The Trinity is a “great mystery” that needs to be lived (a community of love) and not resolved (figured out). The great St. Augustine took 15 volumes just to describe the Trinity let alone explain it. (Remember: the story about Augustine contemplating the Trinity and the little boy who told him he was placing the sea in a hole on the shore. Augustine told him that was impossible, to which, he is supposed to have replied, “Neither can you explain the Trinity.”)
As a puzzle, the Trinity will be forever a mystery to the human mind. But to the human heart, the Trinity is an invitation to come closer to God.
