June 6, 2015 (Tobit 12:1, 5-15 and Mark 12:38-44)

“Beware of the scribes, who…devour the houses of widows.” In the Book of Tobit reading, Raphael reveals his true identity:”…one of the 7 angels who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord.” Raphael is a model of humility contrasted with the scribes in today’s gospel story. They parade around showing off and drawing attention to themselves. The widow in the story gives two small coins but it was “all she had.” This was a real sacrificial offering on her part. What about our giving? Do we make a sacrificial offering or give from our excess, if we give at all. The sense of obligation to give to God seems to be an “old fashioned” thing. At daily mass in Ordinary Time, this reading is the last from Mark as we begin Jesus’ public ministry all over again as told by Matthew this coming Monday.
