July 1, 2015 (Gen 21:5, 8-20a)

“Drive out that slave and her son!” Sarah tells Abraham to get rid of Hagar and Ishmael. It is an “origin” story that is meant to explain the long history of hatred of the tribes that became known as Jews and Muslims. Hatreds continue to today. Misery and suffering are the results and we see that played out over and over again in the news headlines. Today, more than ever, we all need to come to our senses. But, if there is to be peace in the world, as St. Francis tells us, “it must begin with me.”
