August 1, 2015 (Memorial of St. Alphonsus Liguori)

Lev 25:8-17 is the reading for Aug. 1. Yesterday and today, the First Reading at mass is from Leviticus (the 3rd Book of the O.T.). (Monday we’ll read from Numbers.) Yesterday, we heard of the pilgrimage festivals. Today, we hear about the Sabbatical Year or Jubilee Year. On the First Sunday of this coming Advent, Pope Francis has called for a Jubilee Year centered around God’s mercy. This will be a great time to reconcile with others, to end old divisions, to be merciful “as Your Father is merciful.” We need to forgive as God has forgiven us. Now is the time to get ready as Advent is just around the corner (next week we start Vol IV of the Liturgy of the Hours). Lord, help us to give up old grudges and inspire us to be merciful.
