August 6, 2015 (Feast of The Transfiguration)

“This is my beloved Son, Listen to Him.” The three apostles have a very unique experience of who Jesus really is. It doesn’t last for long. “Peak experiences” don’t last for long.

We have experiences of God, as well. We don’t have ones like they had (at least most of us don’t) but the experiences we have are just as real. We experience God in the Eucharist, the sacraments, Sacred Scripture, and one another.

  1. The feast of the Transfiguration brings to mind a discussion I once had with a close friend. My friend maintained that the mention of Christ’s descent into hell, (Apostle’s Creed) alluded to His going to a place of waiting and releasing the souls of those who died in God’s friendship before His salvific act in time. There are those who believe that persons could not enter heaven before Jesus’ death and resurrection in our linear time.

What I had been taught was that the souls of the just went to heaven when they died. Those who died before Jesus’ salvific act entered heaven in view of what Christ would do in time, and those after He died went to heaven because of what He had done in time. The fact that Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus, on Mt. Tabor, in a glorified state, before Christ’s death, would seem to add weight to what I was taught.
