Sept. 28, 2015 (Zech 8:1-8)

Zechariah was a prophet contemporary with Haggai. He prophesied between 520-518 BC, and, like Haggai, urged the people to rebuild the destroyed temple. The repairs were completed in 515 BC. We hear today about the refugees coming back from Babylon to resettle and rebuild destroyed Jerusalem. The second half of the Book was probably written in the 400’s and placed an emphasis on the coming of God’s anointed (Messiah). The Gospel evangelists and the early Church saw Jesus in these prophesies. The entire Book of Zechariah stresses the need for unity. Pope Francis’ trip to the USA and his preaching stress the need for unity and bridges to bring people together. You might say he is a modern-day “Zechariah.”
