Nov. 16, 2015 (1 Macc. 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63)

Today’s reading sets up the content of the two books of Maccabees. After the Greeks conquered the known world under Alexander the Great, one of his generals became the ruler over Asia Minor which included Palestine. They imported the Greek life style and philosophy. Many of the Jews gave up their Jewish ways and became “Hellenized.” One of the Greek rulers actually set up a pagan image in the Temple itself. This is often referred in Scripture as “the abomination of abominations.” The Maccabees led a revolt that eventually won a short-lived independence. The country would eventually be taken over by the Romans. Many of the Jews were taken in by this cultural change and gave up their ancient customs. How are you affected by th modern culture? Do you conform and give up your “ancestral customs,” too?
