“I will prove myself worthy of my old age, and I will leave to the young a noble example.” Not everyone became “Hellenized.” Today’s reading tells of an old man who refused to eat pork, sin against the dietary laws. They even told him “to fake it.” Eat some other form of meat and claim that it is pork. (Kind of like crossing our fingers behind our backs when we tell a Lie!) He refused. Refusal meant death. He wouldn’t break that law that was distinctly Jewish. He also didn’t want to give a bad example to the young.
I think this story really resonates today. Our culture keeps telling us that Christianity is outdated. We are not “progressive,” etc. Will we have the courage of the old man in today’s readings and not give up our “ancestral customs” and beliefs” Will we not let the culture lead us down the wrong paths?
