Dec. 17, 2015 (Matt 1:1-17)

Starting on Dec. 17, there are special masses and readings leading up to Christmas. What do I mean? Well, we don’t celebrate the Thursday of the 3rd week of Advent but a special mass specifically for Dec. 17, and so forth. The famous “O, Antiphons” begin. They are the basis for the lyrics for “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” The O Antiphons are used at Evening Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. We are on the home stretch to Christmas!

The Gospel today is the one that we priests dread: the genealogy of Jesus (through Joseph, the House of Judah), all the names that are so hard to pronounce. It is very important to recognize that Jesus is both God and man. Some of His ancestors are not such good people. (Not unlike us; just check with Ancestry. com) Therefore, His ancestors are important. There were even skeletons in His closet.
