Dec. 19, 2015 (Judg 13:2-17) (Luke 1:5-25)

It is interesting that both readings (about Samuel and John the Baptist) mention to abstain from “wine [and] strong drink.” In other places the Bible, wine is associated with a joyful relationship with God. At this time of the much “wine [and] strong drink” is consumed. Maybe, the readings are telling us to make sure that we don’t overdo in our celebrating.

  1. I think it was Chesterton who wrote:
    “Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine
    There is always laughter and good red wine.
    At least I’ve always found it so;
    Benedicamus Domino.”
