Jan. 4, 2016 (1 John 3:22-4:6)

One of the themes in today’s reading from First John is what has become known as “discernment of spirits.” How do we know that the “religious experience,” the feelings we have are authentic and come from God and not ourselves or the devil? Well, in my experience, it is not always easy. I have had the added benefit of taking such things to a spiritual director. But, I think that the bottom line is: do these feelings result in actions that are definitely actions that Christ and His Church approve of? If they are, then the feelings should lead to correct acts, to acting charitably.

  1. “By their fruits you shall know them. … Every good tree produces good fruit and a rotten tree bears bad fruit.” (Mat 7, 16-17) Though Jesus was speaking of false prophets, the principle is the same.
