“He must increase; I must decrease.” The gospels make it very apparent that John the Baptist is of lesser stature than Jesus. John points the way to “the Lamb of God,” Jesus. He says he is Jesus’ slave, “unworthy to unloose His shoe strap,” etc. Scholars believe there may have been tensions between John’s disciples and Jesus’ disciples, although we know some of John disciples turned to Jesus, e.g. Andrew. I’m sure “egos” got involved, just as happens in parish life today. We must all come to the conclusion that “I must decease,” because, at the end of the day, the only One who needs to increase is Jesus Himself.
