Feb. 3, 2016 (Optional memorial of St. Blaise)

‘Where did this man get all this?” (Mark 6: 1-6) They just couldn’t understand how a carpenter could talk and do the things Jesus did. What is a prophet? Biblically speaking, he’s not a fortune-teller. He is one who speaks for God. A prophet “comforts the afflicted, and afflicts the comfortable,” in other words, he calls people back to covenant relationship with God. That’s probably why so many of the prophets were persecuted. He makes each of us take a hard look at ourselves and sometimes we don’t much care for what we see!
