Feb. 15, 2016 Lev. 19:1-2, 11-18

The reading from Leviticus comes from the section usually referred to as “The Holiness Code.” It starts with telling us that we need to be holy as the Lord God is holy! What a requirement! How can we possibly be able to do such a thing? This is one of the readings during the first 3+ weeks of Lent that are meant to make us realize how far we have to go to be what God wants us to be. We call it “compunction.” It’s meant to burst our balloon. God is totally “other.” The gospel from Matthew Chapter 25 tells us how to get started: by doing acts of charity to the “least of My [Christ’s] brethren.
