Feb. 17, 2016 (Jonah 3:1-10)

“They proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.” Yesterday, we focused on prayer; today we focus on the second traditional penitential practice:fasting. Jonah is aboard ship and there is a terrible storm. The crew resorts to fasting as a way to survive this calamity. Fasting should unite us to those who lack basic sustenance. It should not be an inconvenience for us or just be a change of diet for us. Fasting should put us in solidarity with those who struggle to survive. Our sacrifice should benefit others.
