In today’s Gospel, the owner of the fig tree tells his gardener to chop it down. But, the gardener, even after 3 years with no fruit (actually the 9th year of its existence) wants to give the tree one more year to produce. When we present ourselves for the sacrament of reconciliation, we rediscover how patient Jesus is with our failures.
Ps: about fig tress in Jesus’ time. It didn’t start producing fruit until year 4 and for years 4, 5, and 6 the fruit was considered “unclean” and couldn’t be eaten. In year 7, the produce was to be offered to God. So, when the parable says that the owner came for 3 years to find fruit, that would have been years 7, 8, 9.
