Feb. 29, 2016 (2 Kings 5:1-15ab)

James Michener’s book, The Source, tells of a people who stopped the worship of their gods because they had grown tired of their gods who were not demanding and turned to the worship of a god called Melak (the Bible knows him by the name Moloch) because his demands were severe ( he demanded the immolation of children). This god was known in ancient Israel because prophets like Jeremiah spoke out against this practice.

Has modern-day Christianity become “watered down?” Anthony of Egypt went out into the desert in response to the “easiness” of the Christianity of his time. Fortunately for us, the Church gives us the Season of Lent to remind us of Jesus’ demands on us: “Take up your cross daily and follow Me.”
