March 1, 2016 (Daniel 3:25, 34-43)

The prayer of Azariah, Abednego, with his friends in the fiery furnace teaches us an important lesson about prayer. When we are low, we have only God’s mercy to depend on. Our prayer should be that God receive us as an acceptable offering. The three in the fiery furnace don’t lament their imminent death, but declares their reliance on God’s faithfulness and that their deaths be an accepted as a sacrifice.

At each mass, we pray, too, that God will receive us along with Christ. We offer ourselves and our trials and frustrations. When we are the lowest, only God’s kindness can deliver us.
