Jeremiah doesn’t mince words: God is disappointed because the people haven’t kept the covenant. He says that faithfulness has disappeared. Israel is relying on itself and not God. They do not show their face to God. (Jeremiah knows that sin is nothing more than turning away from God.)
Lent is a time to remind us to turn to God; to turn outward to help others. We need to correct our ways. Don’t “supersize” but “downsize.” Don’t save money to do something for ourselves. save money to do something for someone else. Be charitable. Instead of praying for our needs; pray for the needs of others. To paraphrase Jeremiah: Lent is our opportunity to take corrective action and make faithfulness appear once again.
