April 29, 2016 (Acts 15:22-31)

“It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and us…” The letter sent to the gentiles expresses the thought that the Council of Jerusalem was guided by the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit guides the Church today. Whenever I read a disparaging article on the internet emphasizing the problems in the Church, I try to remember this fact. In spite of all the bad things that has happened or been done by the Church, after 2000 years, we are still here. How deep is your faith that the Holy Spirit keeps guiding the Church?

  1. Today is also the feast day of St. Catherine of Siena. The Church of her day had much to criticize, beginning with the pope and on down. Her most well known act was getting the pope to move back to Rome from Avignon France. The clerical church is only part of the Church. We lay people make up the rest of the Church, and together with the clergy, make up the body of Christ. While criticism of either part of the body may be deserved we have to remember that it is an institution founded by Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit. In spite of how far we stray in our parts of the body the Holy Spirit will guide it and heal its wounds. By the grace of that same Holy Spirit may our criticism always be constructive and aimed at healing and building up the Body Of Christ.
