June 10, 2016 (1 Kings 19:9a, 11-16)

“Elijah why are you here?” The prophet has won a great victory over the priests of Baal. He has executed them after a contest in which the Lord God prevails over Baal. Yet, he is scared and despairing. He knows Jezebel won’t rest until she gets vengeance on him. He runs away and is ready to die. God doesn’t give him words of comfort. Instead, he is told to stand so that God will pass by. There is a mighty wind, an earthquake, and fire. But, God is not in any of those. Instead, God is in a “still small voice,” “or whispering sound.” Somehow, that gives Elijah courage to go on. O God, may Your presence as a still small voice in our lives allay our fears.
