You know the jokes that begin, “I’ve got some good news and some bad news?” Here’s one. Two friends in a nursing home constantly talked to each other about baseball. They loved the sport and couldn’t get enough. They made an agreement that who ever died first would come back and tell the other if there was baseball in heaven. One died. He came back and said that the good news was they played baseball every day, the weather and field were perfect. “Well, what is the bad news?” the living one inquired. “The bad news? Well, you are pitching on Tuesday.” On a more serious note, Jesus has good and bad news for us in today’s gospel: the bad news is that He must die and so must each of us; the good news is that together with Him we will live forever.
