Aug. 17, 2016 (Matt 20:1-16)

“Are you envious because I am generous?” I don’t know about your answer but mine is: “Not at all. I want You, God, to be generous.” Today, we hear the parable usually referred to as:the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard. One great teacher called it: the Parable of the Bargainers and the Beggars. The first group are the bargainers; they want more because what they agreed on doesn’t seem fair since others who worked less are getting the same wage. The last group are the beggars: they accept whatever the owner decides. This parable is about what the Theologian, Hans Urs von Balthasar called the “wastefulness” of God, whose pay is mercy-overwhelming, unlimited, immeasurable mercy. I don’t know about you but I’m more comfortable with God being generous than giving me “what I deserve.” How about you?
