Aug. 24, 2016 (St. Bartholomew)

The Church equates Bartholomew with the same disciple called Nathaniel in the Gospel of John. Today’s reading has one of the few “jokes” in the Bible. Nathaniel is under the fig tree and Jesus tells him who he is and that he is without duplicity. Nathaniel is so impressed that he says that Jesus is the “messiah.” In modern day language Jesus responds with “if you think that’s good, you ain’t seen nothing, yet!” And, of course, Nathaniel would see wonders! Jesus”knew” Nathaniel. He knows each one of us, too!
