Sep. 3, 2016 (Luke 6:1-5)

“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” The Pharisees were trying to defend a way of life that had served their people fine for centuries. They wanted to preserve their customs at all costs. Jesus tells them that it is OK for His disciples to pick grain (work) on the Sabbath as that was the only way to keep from being hungry. There are times when a minister will find himself struggling between law and license, between tradition and needs of his people. Is the person’s needs more important than observing the regulations? In those circumstances, we need the guidance of Jesus and do the pastoral thing.

  1. While I whole heartedly agree with the point you are making, it does seem to me that in our secular world the fourth commandment seems to be one of the most ignored commandments of all ten. It has gone the way of the word “fornication.” It just doesn’t exist anymore.
