Sep. 14, 2016 (Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross)

(John 3:13-17) Today’s readings at mass include the famous John 3:16 that we see held up at football games. God did indeed send His only Son. It’s been over 2000 years but is the world less cruel than when Jesus was on earth? Is it appreciably better? I doubt it. What went wrong. Yet, God’s mercy and love shine as beacons of hope and redemption.

  1. What went wrong? I say, “Look at what has gone right.” Most of wounded mankind struggles to be good. Once in awhile heroic individuals succeed despite their wounds and we see a Mother Teresa, a St. Vincent, a Maximillian Kolbe, an Edith Stein, emerge from the crowd. The cruel world is then a little less cruel and made a little warmer by their love. The struggling wounded masses then take courage and strive to move forward and God is pleased. If we were not imperfect, God could not be our savior.
