WK 31C (2016)

The story of Zacchaeus must be understood when contrasted with the story of the rich man in Chapter 18 of Luke. Both the rich man and Zacchaeus were powerful in their own right. The rich man would have been considered righteous; Zacchaeus would have been considered unclean and a sinner. Everything about the rich man suggested piety; corruption with regard to Zacchaeus. Appearances can be deceiving.

Sometimes, we can find ourselves “up a tree,” even in our relationship with God. (Ever felt that way?) Remember Zacchaeus. Jesus brought him down safely and restored him to the community. (A ” child of Abraham) This is why Jesus still comes into our lives; to bring salvation to our own houses.
