Today is also the Optional Memorial for one of the most famous martyrs of the Middle Ages, Thomas Becket, who was murdered while at the altar by a group of knights. As Archbishop of Canterbury he defended the freedoms and rights of the Church. He was canonized just 3 years after his death. When I was stationed in England I visited the Cathedral where he was martyred. It is a famous place of pilgrimage and was the destination for the pilgrims in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
