Jan. 2, 2017 (Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen)

(John 1:19-28) The story of John the Baptist is in all 4 Gospels. Mark paints him as a rather strange figure, a wild man in strange attire. Yet, John, the Evangelist, gives no such details. Here John the Baptist tells us who he is by answering the priest and Levites’ questions. He says that he is not the Christ. He says that he “is the voice.” He was a messenger to prepare the way for the One who would come after him. May we be messengers of the Lord, as well, in this new year.
