Today is an Optional Memorial involving the Holy Name of Jesus. It’s so new that there are no specific mass prayers yet. Growing up, the Brothers and Sisters taught us to bow our heads at the name of “Jesus.” Paul says that we should even “bend our knee” at His name. This devotion seems to have almost disappeared from Catholic practice. That’s a shame. Jesus’ name should be venerated. It means “YHWH saves.” He is our “Savior.” I try at mass to make sure that I bow my head when the “Name” is said. Remember how holy the Jews believed “WHYH’s” name was? It could only be pronounced out aloud by the High Priest when alone in the Holy of Holies on the Day of Attonement, once a year. Let us use today to show our veneration of Jesus’ name and begin the Catholic practice of bowing at its pronouncing.
