Jan. 17, 2017 (Memorial of St. Anthony of Egypt)

St. Anthony of Egypt (to differentiate him from St. Anthony of Padua) was a very interesting person. He lived to be 105 years old. In the 4th century, people used to live to about 35 years. He spent most of his life fighting the Devil while being a hermit in the desert. He gave away his possessions after hearing the Gospel of the Rich Young Man. He helped his biographer, St. Athanasius, the hero of the Council of Nicea, to fight the Arian heresies. He was considered a man of wisdom and people used to go out to his cave to ask him for advice. Evil is a reality and Anthony knew this and used the crucifix as his weapon to fight the Devil.
