Today’s readings have to do with fasting. In the Gospel, Jesus is criticized for not making His disciples fast. It seems a strange gospel one day after Ash Wednesday? Lest we think Jesus was against fasting, we know He Himself fasted (40 days in the wilderness, for example). What He is really doing is saying there is a time to fast and a time to feast. For example, we wouldn’t think about fasting on a Sunday as each Sunday is a “little Easter.” What do we need to do to make Sunday more a “Feast Day”?
