For the Jews in Jesus’ time, fasting meant going without food or drink of any kind. By Scripture, it was only required once a year: on the Day of Atonement. However, a person might voluntarily fast, e.g. the Pharisees fasted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So, the early Christians fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays.
