July 11, 2017 (Required Memorial of St. Benedict)

Today’s First Reading from Genesis is the story of Jacob’s wrestling with the “man” (angel). Jacob had been quite a trickster (he did Essau out of his birthright, swindled Laban, etc.) But, from this incident on, he would change, have a conversion. Not only his hip came out of its socket, bur he turned into the patriarch he was meant to be. You might say, he “struggled” with God (his conscience). His name changed to “Israel” to mark the occasion. We struggle with our conscience, too. We need constant conversion in our lives. Let’s remember Jacob. We can change our lives, too.
