The First Readings the last couple of days at mass have been the Joseph Story. This is a wonderful story, so much so that it is a favorite of Hollywood. Literary people often call it the first short novel (novella) in literature. The story contains everything: pride, jealousy, hatred, false accusations, suffering, revenge, and ultimately forgiveness and redemption. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Joseph execute vengeance on his brothers for what they did to him, but his heart softens and he forgives and restores. God does that with us. He forgives and restores us to His friendship. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
