One of the key players in the Exodus story is, of course, the Pharoah. Repeatedly, we hear how his heart “was hardened.” You might say that his heart had atrophied. He couldn’t feel compassion or understanding for others, especially the Hebrew slaves. Sometimes, our heart gets hardened, too. We’ve been hurt by someone and just can’t get over it and forgive. In the words of Ezekiel, we need to ask God to take our stony hearts and replace them with natural hearts.
