Aug. 29, 2017 (The Passion of St. John the Baptist)

The old name for today’s Memorial was “the Beheading of St. John the Baptist” and that’s the story we hear in the gospel for today(The name change connects John’s suffering and death with that of Jesus. He was born before Jesus and died before Him as well.) John plays a very important role in the development of Christianity: he is the hinge between the two Testaments. He serves as the precursor of Christ in preparing the people for Jesus’ earthly ministry and as the one who pointed to Christ: “there is the Lamb of God.”
