Sep. 19, 2017 (Lk 7:11-17)

In today’s gospel, Jesus restores a dead boy to his widowed mother. In the Synoptic Tradition, usually Jesus demands an act of faith (allegiance to Him) before He cures. But, He did today’s miracle out of compassion for this woman who would have been abandoned in her society, not having any males to care for her. Was Jesus thinking of His mother and His impending death? His giving His mother to John and, ultimately, us? We can be like Jesus when we act out of compassion for someone in need.
