WK 30A (2017)

In reply to the question of what is the greatest commandment, Jesus combines two: love of God and love of neighbor. The scandal of today’s challenge of Jesus is that the Pharisees tried to use what is central to our relationship with God as a means to test Jesus. Here is the surprise of today’s gospel: love of God and love of neighbor can’t be separated. (In loving our neighbor, we, indeed, love God.) Why? It is because our neighbor was made in the image and likeness of God and bears within, the presence of God. Further, our love for God can’t just be thought of or even said, but must be carried out by loving actions. Thus, Jesus makes it very clear that we are to love God totally and to love our neighbor, as well. Do we? For we must love as Jesus loves!
